GU6 is the 3.42 rear. That is the larger carrier, so you can use bigger gears if you wish without changing it.

Check your build tag again... I have never seen a "GU60" code.... they are all 3-digit as far as I know. And there was never a GU6 used in the 1993...... rear axle codes:

      M6 with 3.36 1st gear (M28) came with 2.73 gears (GU2)

      M6 with 2.97 1st gear (M29) came with 3.23 gears (GU5)

A4 with "standard" axle came with 2.73 gears (GU2)

A4 with "performance" axle came with 3.23 gears (GU5)

The problem with swapping gears relates to the size of the "carrier"..... the center part of the differential that holds the ring gear, and includes the spider gears and limited slip mechanism.

The 2.73's were installed in a "2-series" carrier. The 3.23's were installed in a "3-series" carrier. You must buy gears made specifically for the "series" carrier in your car. It relates to the space available between the ring gear mounting surface and the pinion shaft centerline.

Before you can change gears, you really need to know exactly which trans you have and exactly which gears the car came from the factory with. The "rules of thumb"..... 4.10's for an M6.... do not apply to 1993 M6's. You would have way too much gear with 4.10's in a 1993 with the M28 M6.

      Which trans do you have?

Which RPO code do you have for your gears?

What is your goal for upgrading gears?

GU5 is the 3.23 gears. They are in a 3-series carrier. That carrier accepts gears of 3.23 and higher (numerical). You could get 3.73's or 4.10's for that carrier. But which transmission do you have - A4 or M6?

The number of axle splines doesn't change with the gear ratio. I'm pretty sure all the 4th Gen 10-bolt stock setups are 28-spline.

                  Yes.... "A4" = 4-speed automatic. 4L60 in the 1993. 4L60E in the 94 and newer models.
