  • Help....Water Leak !!!

    Hello guys:

I had a problem with the water temp rising in town about 4 months ago or so, but really never did get above 225. The fan would kick back on and cool it back down to half or close but kept repeating until i got up to highway speed. I did a complete flush twice and 2 new thermostats and thought it was fixed ubtil around a month ago. Then every now and then I would drive 30 minutes or so and shut it off and coolant would come out from the overflow. My wife drives it to work on 3rd shift and 2 weeks ago said that she stopped at a store on the way home and noticed a fine stream of water coming from the pulley area. Immediately iI figured water pump!!!. I bought a new one and after a frustrating day of putting it on it was fine for about a week. This morning when she got home she said she stopped at a store again and came back out and noticed fluid on pavement once again. She raised the hood and looked and later showed me where she seen it all wet at......Below the 2 heater core hoses at the firewall...... So my question is are they known to get blocked up and maybe cause overheating and possible leak or could it be shot and also cause this problem ?..I checked the hoses and they are fine and am not getting any fluid on the inside floor. Sorry for the lenght guys, but any info would be deeply appeciated !!!!!!

    Thanks for reading, Ron

Its possible, I dont know that they are known for it. The heater core or radiator could certainly be blocked up. Are you run Dex Crap, er.......Dex Cool? Dex Cool is known for clogging up everything. Was the coolant all brown and stalized? Try flushing it through. You can pull the two hoses off the heater core and try backflushing just the core too.

You can switch to the green stuff too, if you are running the dex cool now. Just flush real good.

Don't use the green stuff if you have aluminum heads. It is corrosive to aluminum.

Ive used the green stuff in my car for years. Ive always kept it changed, but I have never had a problem. If you let it go without changing it, it can be corrosive. I would agree with that. That Dex Cool stuff is the worst in my book. Ive seen that stuff clog up so many engines - its ridiculous. The thing is, its supposed to be 100,000 mile fluid. Your lucky if you get 25K without it gelling and stallizing.

It is so interesting how different the opinions on Dex-cool can be. Some people claim it is the devil and clogged up their motors and then again I know several people with GM vehicles that have over 100K with the original Dex-cool and it is still bright orange. When my water pump on my 97 WS6 went at 65K the Dex-cool was still bright orange as well.

The only time I have ever heard of a problem with Dex-cool was when someone ran their car with very little coolant.

            Who knows!

Maybe climate has a lot to do with it? Around here......7 out of 10 Dex Cool cars I see with over 50K are starting to tallize. My wife had a 96 GP. Now, I take car of my cars.... I may beat them....but I keep up on the maintanance. At 40k, I brought it in to have it flushed out becasue when I lifted the rad cap, it was SOLID gunk. No joke.

youve got to admit too, there are a lot of cars ou there that have aluminum heads that run the green stuff.........

That is a good point about the climate. It may have an effect on the dex-cool properties. But I can assure you that late model GM motors will significantly suffer from corrosion if the green stuff is used. They were engineered to only use dex-cool.

Wolfman had a link to a very good article describing this in detail.

I flushed out my system a few weeks ago and I noticed that it had some nasty sludge and brown gunk...Dex Cool was brown. I figured that it was my fault that there was gunk build up.

                  BUT....

My vans at work, a few of them are 100K running the same coolant and still bright orange...

                  WHO KNOWS

I'll still use DEXCOOL simply because my car was designed for it...I always wondered why GM used orange when everyone else used green...

FYI there is a class action lawsuit against the dex-cool stuff for engine damage. There was a thread about this same thing a while back, You could probably search and find it. No time today.

After GM looked into this, it was found that the vast majority of people who were attemting to sue GM had ran their motors on low coolant.

This class action suit probably won't get far.

It is also possible that you may have a partially blown headgasket........

yeah, I thought about that too joe, but i did the cap compression deal with it off and also with it running and it held pressure pretty good. And yes it did have dex-cool in it before and it really had me worried cause the stuff looked so nasty that it looked like oil in it.But after talking to several people I found out that that is what dex-cool does MOST of the time. I'll try maybe just unhookin the heater hoses and try to flush the core itself.

If the dex was brown, I would bet its got everything clogged up. FLush it until the water runs clear.
