  • Nitto 555 or Goodyear GS-D3? What do you guys think?

NT 555 Extreme Performance, BFG KDW, or Goodyear F1 GS-D3?

I thought I finally made up my mind to use the Goodyear GS-D3s, then while at Discount Tire, the guy helping me showed me his car with a set of Nitto NT 555 Extremes on it. His are 18 inch wheels, but he said he got 40k miles on them and they still had quite a bit of tread left.

How about all? Anyone using Nitto 555 Extremes? How do they perform and wear?

I have them on right now...they look really good and hold up well against wear. Grip is strong and I regularly cruise at 65 in storms...I think the side walls could be a lil stiffer...but all in all, when people see my tires, they know it's all business.

I had NT450s before and the performance (aside from going to bigger rims and size; had 245 on 16's now I'm on 275 on 17's) of the 555's blows it away. If you don't drive a lot in the rain, I'd go with the 555R...thread wear of 300 and even more aggressive design (they cost less too).

If you're on a slight budget (not saying 555's are cheap) then grab you the 555's...but if you got money to burn, I'll get the the BFG's (but run only the Gforce KD)...personally, I don't like Goodyears too much, I've had bad experence with them.

I got mine with insurance and all for about $760 (before tax) for all 4. Discount is the only tire place I deal with...they'll treat you well.

I just ordered a new pair of Nitto NT555R's. Gotta say I am definately pleased with the traction. They do wear pretty quick though, and pick up everything on the road. I just got back from getting my current ones patched, picked up 2 large screws. At first nobody wanted to patch them, but I got lucky and knew somebody. New pair is coming in Monday, so hopefully the patches will hold untill then.

That's not cool... perhaps I'll invest in the road hazard protection... nearly 200 bucks for 4 DS-D3s though.

I know I'm gonna sound like the odd man out, but I've been using the BFG KDWs for about a year now and love 'em. Excellent wet weather traction (except hard turns from a stop with some throttle ), even at freeway speeds of 70-80. Only had them lose traction when I've dumped the clutch. The KDs are definitely a lot more aggressive, but for a daily street tire the KDW is a very good choice. The only downside I've noticed is that they want to follow the grooves of the road sometimes, but that's also on CA's crappy roads. Other states might be different. But, I've used BFG tires on both the Jeep and the Z, and I don't think I'll go to anyone else. Dollar for dollar, I think the KDWs would be your best bet. That's just my 2 cents though

How many miles have you put on them in that year and how much tread seems to be left?

              Thanks for your thoughts all!

I've put about 12k+ on them and they still have at least 2 or 3 years left on them (probably more). As long as you're not smokin' them or cornering hard every day, they should last you at least 30k or more (my guess is more). Let me know if there's anything else I can do. Good luck on your decision man. Take it easy.

Thanx Steve. I don't know that the extra 20 dollars / tire is going to break me, so it might just end-up coming down to aesthetics, and I think the DS-D3s have won in that catagory. I have always like that look. The Nittos are okay, but the KDWs look more like a standard tire to me. If you go to BFG's site they actually show it in an alt. tread pattern, but no one around here has that.

Thanks... I'll have to think about it.

Yeah, the alt. tread pattern looks awesome, but its only available on certain sizes and I'm not sure if it will propogate to other sizes or not. The only thing I would be wary of with the Goodyear's is that they are notorious for short tread life according to those that I've talked to who either have them or have had them. Just something to keep in the back your mind. Lemme know what you go with. Also, I can't find any info on the GS-D3s. Any links?
