  • Goodyear GS-D3 and hardening

    I know as my GS-Cs got older, the tread compound got harder which really sucks now that they have very little tread left (27k miles).

    My question for owners of the Goodyear GS-D3s: is this happening to your tires? Also, who here has the GS-D3 with the most miles on them?

    I have a couple days left before I have to chose between the GS-D3 and the Nitto 555 Extreme. The price difference is not that much, $975 for the GS-D3s or $862 for the Nittos. I wanna get at least 30k miles out of these driving "average." Also, I don't take freeway on ramps at 150 MPH, so I really don't need a "max performance summer tire," I just really like the looks of the GS-D3s... but not if they won't last me 3-5 years and/or >30k miles. I put about 7-8k miles (most of them highway) on my car per year.

    Thanks for the info all.

      Tire rack says the tread wear is excellent.....

      now.. your main thrust is you want 30k miles out of them..yet you make reference to the rubber hardning with age and wear... that does not shorten the life of the tread...it only reduces wet and dry traction.

        I just got my GS3 installed and love the grip they have. The car seems a little slower now that I have more grip. Not as much slipping. I got he 275/40 ZR17s.

          grip = fast
          slip = slow

            OK its just a that is grips so well and smooth that I don't associate the sensation of speed. (The car does not get sideways so much) The car now accelerates very smoothly with only a little chirp from the tires. They look pretty awesome! There is a lip that goes around the wheels. Its supposed to help protect the wheel when you scrap a curb or something.

              Oh also noticed the wheels are much better balanced after they put new wheel weights on. I took it up to 100 or so with my hand off the steering wheel. No traffic of coarse and it felt very stable.

                How much tread do you have left after 15k?

                  glad you didnt have a blow out.......... with your hands off the wheel.
                  you dont need to do that though... that only proves your front end alignment is ok. wheel balance problems come in between 60 -70 mph..and can be felt by holding the steering wheel very lightly...easily. a tire will not generate anymore out of balance condition at 100 than it does at 70.
