  • Survived the hurricane but lost the roof

We took a pounding this time. The storm sat off the coast and casually wandered it's way across the state. The first night, I heard the sound of a tornado and took cover. In an instant, a large oak tree was ripped in half (the top half was ripped off), my large tower and TV antenna destroyed and about 1/4 of the roof was scattered around neighborhood. I got lucky yet at the same time cursed.

The GN and the 97WS6 were safely tucked away in the garage which ended up still with water on the floor even though we are on high ground. The water was being blown under doorways and such. The Fiero was parked out front and was moved about 3 feet! You can see the tire marks where the front end was rotated from the force. That is really freaky! I spent days stuck inside with nothing to do except apply more Zaino to the WS6.

However, now I'm off to home depot for materials and have to quickly do a partial roof before rains cause even more damage. It really sucks when hurricane insurance has such a high deductabile, now I have to do the thing solo.......

I still have no idea where the spare wheel and tire in my front yard came from. It certainly isn't mine.

Wow, you put it exactly right saying you lucky but cursed at the same time. but surviving 2 hurricanes this close together, thats the important part - that your ok. and from what ive seen on cnn and such looks like you got pretty lucky. Good luck geting every thing fixed, and be safe up there . . . part of it is gone, gota make you queston how stong the rest will be.

Taking a break from doing the roof. It's brutally hot up there. I think I'll wait awhile to go back up. The toughest job is getting the new shingles from the ground up to the roof by yourself. Pros have lifts. I'm down to about a 6 ft by 20 foot section to finish it. The bummer is I couldn't quite get the right matching color shingles. The new are a little lighter. What is amazing is how the roof sealant in a tube can get onto everything even when you are extremely careful. If I drank, here's when one would kick back with a few beers and enjoy the rest of the holiday.

On a side note, it's a little scary seeing some of your trees with hardly any leaves, but full of roof shingles. All the while, a bird's nest in a palm tree survived and the parents have returned to feed their babies. Nature is a wonder.

i'd rather have the snow and the traffic than the heat and the hurricanes personally.....and i would just tell a politician where to shove it and what to kiss if they gave me any grief...

glad you and your rides survived man, and good luck getting everything put back together....and i'm sure the shingles will probably match after a little time out in the elements if they're pretty close already

I finished the majority of the work last night about 9 pm. Good thing too, the mosquitos were attacking with a vengeance. I still have some finishing work to do but at least there are no leaks. The cap has to come off and a little more damage removal and replacement for a professional look. I should be able to knock that out sometime this week before the next one arrives.

Let me tell you guys something...... I miss the change of colors through the seasons, the cool air, kids playing in the snow, hills, etc. What I don't miss is the snow that turns a lovely brown, the salt that rots out everything it touches and the frequent vehicle ice hockey olympics that takes place on a daily basis in the winter. The rest of the time, it's just peachy.

So for now, my family situation and my career forces me to endure the land of paradise. What you put up with for supposed paradise are things like fire ants, love bugs, mosquitos that you could put a leash on, stinking hot and humid weather, storms that make you a believer in the whole Noah's ark scenerio and elderly drivers that play vehicle roller hockey olympics for no apparent reason on a clear day and believe me the situation gets downright scary in the rain. Tourists are worse. I could also care less if I ever see another palm tree.

The wonderful thing down here are the winters. It's like fall but with no color change. That weather right there is what really makes this place a tolerable so called paradise.

I wish that I could get ahold of my family. My parents & 2 brothers live in a house outside of Daytona Beach. My grandparents live in a house in Fort Pierce and my aunt & uncle live in a trailer in Fort Pierce!! I havent been able to contact any of them! I have to assume that power & phone lines are down in there area. I am not usually the worrying type... But I am thinking about jumping on a plane to Georgia and driving the rest of the way.

Ft. Pierce is due east of me. Total drive time is about an hour and 10 minutes. They took a pretty good pounding as the eye made landfall just south of that. I hope they are OK.
