My final decision (for now)

I went to the Volvo dealer, and even a Toyota dealer. They appraised my cars - the Cavalier and the Trans Am, and didn't even come close to offering me KBB trade in value for them. I was pretty insulted by what they offerred me, actually. When all was said and done, I would have practically put nothing down on the car, and it would be stupid to take on another $600+ a month payment on that Volvo when I only have $10K remaining on the Trans Am. A friend of mine put it to me really well, "would you sell your car for $10,000? Because that is basically what you are doing."

So...

My final decision is...

PAY MY BUTT OFF on the Trans Am over the next 4 or 5 months. I think I can come up with a couple thousand each month so that I can pay this off before spring tme. Once that is done, I can work to get rid of the Cavalier, and get myself a nice daily driver like the Toyota Corolla XRS.

I am going to just work my tail off and pay my tail off so that I can get rid of the Trans Am's payments as fast as I possibly can. But I am keeping her! And that's final!!!

Why not ace the Cavalier and buy a beater. My cousin is a mechanic in Livonia. He has 5 running cars with mechanic's liens on them for less than $500. That's probably less than a TA payment.

I also have a couple grand in negative equity in the Cavalier.

Once the Trans Am is paid for, I'll dump the Cavalier and get that Corolla XRS that I like so much for a daily driver

are u kidding? u never take a car like a camaro or firbird to a lot for a trade in..they hold no value sell it private party for 2x what they were offering then use it as a down and cut ur payments in half or more

never ever trade ur car in..gota remember they are in the buisness of making money..so they will make money off the car no matter what but dont let them rape u completely (i work a dealership one of the largest in cali..i see it all day long)

Yes, but KBB is supposed to come up with fair values for trade-in. These guys weren't even close to the KBB value for trade-in. I fully understand the difference between trade-in, private party, and retail values... and I was prepared to accept KBB trade-in for it... but like I said, they didn't even come close.

Unfortunately with all the incentives and all the used cars on the market the values KBB, Edmunds and NADAguides give you aren't realistic anymore. The last 2 new cars I bought were less than used ones with the rebates and discounts. Pay that puppy off ASAP and then get yourself a good winter car.

Good choice! Glad to see you "saw the light". I was beggin you not to make the mistake I made - cost me thousands. On another note I am looking at a 93 cavalier with 94K on it for $600 - can you say "winter beater"?
