Unless it's a boat. I kid the fisherman here that they don't need a throttle, they just need an on off switch.

More questions. I had an 86 Thunderbird Turbo coupe a long time ago. The air metering device was a device that had a flapper door hooked to a reostat. The more air coming in would open the door further, well you get the rest. What was this system called?

Next my wife has a Chrysler minivan. 2.4L 4 banger. It does not have a metering device. It is a 97 therefore it has an OBDII. Does that man it is not as good a design? Honestly my Z gets almost as good of gas milleage as her van gets. That 4 banger has to work really hard.

There are a number of types of "mass air meters".... the hot-wire anemometer used in the F-Bodys is just one way to measure flow. The flapper door is another. Toyota had one that had some sort of bypass that took a little slipsteam off the main duct and measured pressure or something.

The 80's - early 90's Toyotas used the flapper door to measure airflow. You could "fool" the computer by adjusting the wheel a tooth or 2 if you did modifications like a header or cam and therefore needed more fuel. But there was an obvious limitation to that system.

This is definately one that's going to be filed away/bookmarked for future reference. Thanks for the detailed explanation Fred Injuneer and Joe 1320 and thanks to Jay for starting the thread.
