  • Need help with cleaning up

Hi everyone, I just had a quick question and its pretty easy I just need to have someone elses opinion on this. I just had my car programed at More Performance and was wondering if I could finally get rid of all the wires I'm not using in my car? I've got A LOT of things unplugged and they are all zipp tied and I dont want them there anymore. I'm thinking I can just trace where the wires are and get rid of them right??

We could answer that question much better if we knew what kind of vehicle you were talking about. It usually is a good idea to put a little info on your ride in your signature.

Which wires specifically are you not using anymore?

There you go! I didnt want to list EVERYTHING because that would take at least 40 minutes to type up! But the car is a 1996 Z28 with the same year motor. M6 for now but working on gettin the tranny out of the Buick. I dont have the air pump anymore and I was just wondering if I could take the wires out of the fuse box under the hood, trace them to where ever they go and take them out?I dont see where it WOULD be a problem.

Same thing for the interior, I've got these hugh bundles of wire for the air bags....yet, no air bags. So that why I am curious. Just looking to clean the gutted interior and engine bay of all the unplugged things. Thanks!

It shouldn't be a problem as long as all the pigtails aren't shorted in any way.

cool, i'll have to give it a try. I have so many freakin wires unplugged everywhere its beginning to drive me insane!

so im just going to trace the wires to the fuse box, take them out of the pins, ans then trace them to the pcm. should I cut them when I get to the pcm or should i try to remove them a little more properly?

If it were me, I would actually pull the terminal connector from the harness terminal so that it would be a clean removal and it would be that much easier to replace the wires down the road say if you wanted to sell the car and return it to a factory-like condition.

awesome fastta, thank you very much! Ummm, I couldn't ever sell this car! I don't think anyone would want a ttop conversion 10 point rollcage car .

But again...thanks a bunch and I'll have to tell you how it all went. Also want to clean up the engine bay a little more too before I rip the gas tank out and put in a fuel cell.

I've got the ac removed right now and I need to install my k-member and manual rack along with the manual brake setup I going to run. And I REALLY want to relocate the alternator but haven't found anyone locally here that has one. I know vendors sell them but they always ask for more than I'm willing to pay...if it costs alot, I'll usually just make it. But I am running out of time and looking for one.

If you know of a really great looking lower alt bracket...let me know!

Thanks again, I'll keep posting the upgrades!!

                Here's one:

                Alt. Relocate Bracket

I think RK Sport makes one as well.

Yeah..someone mentioned that to me and I found a nice one from More Performance that I really like. Mike at More also said that someone makes another one that is similar to theres (running a short belt) and they are SJS or something like that...I forgot.

Actually...it crossed my mind to just run a 16v battery and ditch the alt seeing as its a track car. I might have to charge it after 6 or 7 runs...but its all gravy. Comments?

The 16v setups are definitely the way to go, but it will just depend if you plan on a having your chassis wired to be street legal or just for the taillights. If you really want to get serious, you can eliminate the alternator and battery and use a magneto drive.

Dont think I have seen a magneto drive on a newercar yet! More reason to do it!

I think I would rewire for tail lights and head lights....know anyone hat has done that yet? Or am I the giny pig???

We put in the Painless 12 circuit street legal chassis harness a while back on my 1997 Camaro. At first I thought I was in a little over my head. But I took some small wire ties and divided the harness into the 11 different sections and then went from there. The only thing I was dissapointed with was that we had to do a little modification to the original fuse holder location to get the Painless fuse holder to fit. Other than that, it wasn't too bad once you get rolling on it.

Your starting to make me think . Well, at least I know I do have more than one option to go with...that magneto drive is a nice system BUT, maybe a little too radical this year. Maybe next year! I just need to finish fabbin' my roll cage and finish up the interior before I get a little carried away with other things. Thanks for all your help though!

Are you fabbing your own cage? Chrome-moly or mild steel? Are you using a TIG or ARC?
