Yirian Alonso - The Truth

My name is Luis Mendoza and I am the cousin that Yirian Alonso lived with in Florida. I think that I either spoke with you or met you at my house when you brought the car down. I will privatly send you my info if you wish to contact me.

I was doing a little search looking for videos of the coverage and I came across your posts on a google search. I just want to clear up a couple of things that I read on this string.

First of all your friends are right, He was driving the car and he was responsible for what happened. I obviosly know his parents and I dont expect that you have any "legal" issues to worry about with them. I loved Yirian like my son because in every way that matters he was. I (and his parents) don't blame anybody but the whim of a 19 year old kid who thought that he would live forever.

Secondly THEY WERE NOT DRAGRACING. He had picked up his brother and a friend at highschool on Friday oct 1 and were going down to the Pollo Tropical for dinner. A cousin of Yirian's was also coming along with his brothers other friend that could not fit in the Camero (the white eclipse). They stopped at a light and when it turned green they took off a little quick BUT NOT RACING. Again, I love Yirian and his brother like they were my own but I know him better than anyone and I am sure that he had an impluse to be a showoff and he punched the accelarator to cut in front of his cousin. When he cut to the right he came up on a curve in the road. His rear right tire hit the curb of the road and lost control. He may have regained control for a moment but the road was wet from an earlier rain and there are lots of pine needles on that road. His front left tire hit the dirt of the landscape island between the lanes and he lost control again and hit the tree. Judging from discussion with the driver of the eclipse and the lack of skid marks I suspect that at the last instant he paniced a little and hit the accelerator rather than the break. He was not accustomed to driving a manual transmission car. That car hit the tree at full speed.

The driver of the white eclipse, again his twentyish age cousin pulled him out of the car. Laid him on the ground, watched him vomit blood and breath his last. He then got his brother and friend out of the back seat. His girlfriend was totally crushed and the police did not let him go back and get her. His brother Yurian seemed dazed but relatively unhurt to him. Yurian had a broken neck and a head injury from which he later died. There was one surviver in the back behind his girlfriend. He was being choked buy the seatbelt until Yirian's cousin cut the belt to pull him our. His skull is fractured in multiple places but he is expected to live.

I go to the trouble and considerable pain to tell you this becasue I noticed that you are 19 years old as well. Yiran was a smart kid in good physical shape and very proficient on a motorcycle. He rode a Suzuki GSXR 750 and knew what he was doing. He would tell friends to make sure that they know the bike before they push the bike. he obviouly felt safer in the car and ignored his own advice.

I urge you and your friend to remember that a split second impulse to be a show off cost three people their lives. You can't imagine the anguish that this has cost his parents, me, family, friends. They were all great kids that were well loved by everyone. Hundreds attended the funeral, mass, burial. Many of his friends rode their motorcycles along with his and my bike down to accompany the hurst's on "one last ride".

I am 42 years old and I have had my fun on motorcycles and cars with even a few wrecks. The difference is that todays cars and motorcycles are so powerful that the is NO forgiveness.

I am sorry if I have ranted more than necessary but I was touched by your posting and I wanted to let people know that this was not a dragrace. Yirian loved his brogther and girlfriend and he would NOT endanger their lives in the kind of dragrace that stories about this imply.
