Mobil1 and Castrol are decent, but Red Line and Royal Purple are the way to go if you're serious about it.Steve

Here's what I've learned from reading around....Check out the fourm on www.bobistheoilguy.com. One of the experts there has a 95Z and does regular oil analysis on his spent oil. He's found the best wear protection is given from the German blend of Castrol Syntec 5w-30. The LT1 likes a thicker oil for the least wear. I think he also suggests Mobil1 10w-40. GM suggests 5w-30 I think mostly for milage benefits. I'm running Mobil1 10w-30 right now. It's on the light side for a 10w-30 oil. Milage is down slightly, but the engine sure sounds smoother and quieter.
Do a search on that sight and you'll find some info for LT1's. Oh...you can find your manual here:

Heck, I saved about 1/3-1/2 a tank of gas in the Jeep when I first put it in and took it to Sac. last year, which translates to about 6-9 gallons!!!! When you've gotta fill that beast, every bit helps. Granted its geared more toward racing applications, but the results are still there on the street.Cold engine startups are much harder on street motors than people realize.

I am goping to try Mobil 1 0W40 .. Zero weiggt for those cold start-ups and 40 weight to help seal the rings better.. I am an oil burner... trouble is that I tried 8 places to find Mobil 1 0W40 or 10W40 synthetic, but for some reason, no one has it around meRhode Island Red *Lurker since 1997*

But then again, at roughly $6.50 a quart i hope it would be good
I've heard nothing but good things about mobil1 though, it was just the route i decided to go once i got the t/a being that she has higher miles and that i like to spoil her as wellblack 95 t/a, a4, beefed up tranny w/ higher stall converter, transgo shift kit, trans temp gauge, trans cooler, richmond 3.73's, loudmouth, hypertech programmer, 160 thermo, descreened maf, TB bypass and airfoil, trick flow intake elbow, underdrive pulleys, moroso cai, edelbrock panhard rod, bmr stb, slp sfc's, fiberglass firehawk hood, hawk pads, taylor wires, ngk plugs, royal purple fluids,...and hopefully more to come

I change my oil every 1500-2000 miles, so spending $8/quart on royal purple isn't feasable. If you have the means, go for it.97 Chevy 'Raro Z28 M6- Ported & Polished LT1 heads,beehives,1.6/1.94 valves, 226/231 custom cam,K&N FIPK, 94-95 BBK shorty's,ORY,Magnaflow Catback,no cats,BMR LCA Relocation Brackets,Lower Control Arms,Adjustable Panhard Bar,Eibach Pro Kit,SPEC Stage 1,Walbro 255 Fuel Pump,30LB Injectors,Pro 5.0,Short stick,MSD 8.5's,NGK TR55's,LT4KM
