  • aluminum driveshaft

I have a driveshaft vibrations and i was told that an aluminum driveshaft will cure these problems. Where do i pick one up from? What car are they off of? How much do they generally cost, and will i pick up any time in the quarter becuse i loose 6 pnds of rotating mass or something like that i was told.

A 1LE shaft is available from GM, I might suggest an aluminum LS1 driveshaft at a used auto parts recycler..... would be cheaper.

A 1LE shaft will run about $280 shipped from Pace Parts. The part # is 10085375. I have heard bad rumors about using the LS1 shaft, but they may just be rumors.

If you've heard bad stuff, it would be good to post it so that further investigation could be done.

I've heard that the LS1 shaft isn't quite as strong as the 1LE shaft. Craig could probably shed more light on it, but if I remember correctly, he found a post on cz28.com (I believe) that someone used the LS1 shaft on their LT1 car, put either drag radials or slicks on a twisted the shaft. Not sure what rear-end was being used. I'll talk to Craig and see if he can shed more light and correct me on this. As I said, I'm not sure as to how true it is, but I'll get Craig.

            *** EDIT ***

I did a quick search on cz28.com and found this...

It makes sense...... I think anything but a hard core HD driveshaft is going to break if that happens to be the weak link on a high RPM clutch drop with slicks. Aluminum shafts are fine for the street, and I mean steet.....not slicks at the strip. It is a good heads up though.

Yes it is. It is a different diameter than the 1LE, but it is still an aluminum driveshaft.

                          When did this problem start?

Quite possibly a manufacturing defect. I have seen the stock LS1 driveshafts hold 500+ RWHP consistantly.

There was an article not too long ago in GMHTP that featured a 700 RWHP Camaro that ran the stock LS1 DS for over a year on a M6 with no problems.
