wolfman is doing major computer surgery dec 9. installing new full blown dell in office downstairs and moving old dell upstair for new office for spouse's animal rescue ops. tired of fighting over "hey..i need to get online!".

going wireless for upstairs, hardline down here with my new one. got all the hardware.....yada yad.....but you know how that goes..

Personally, I'd recommend Compaq. Those things are bullet proof. I see a couple of our IBM pcs fail every day. The Compaqs go forever.

I've had horrible experiences with COMPAQ, and have heard nothing but bad things from people owning COMPAQs. Even after HP bought Compaq, the quality still seemed to lack. HP's last forever! I have an HP Pavillion that I bought back in 1996 and this thing still pulls it weight even after all the beatings I gave it when I was frustrated (dial-up era.)

My first computer was a Compaq....the hard drive crashed like 6 months after I got...then the software started going all wonky, the "quick access" buttons pushed through and fell inside the case....that thing was a POS. I have a Dell now and love it, except for the fact that it can't be overclocked. But, oh well. I will most likely try to build my next one.But I will probably keep this Dell for the next 5 years or so.

I think the problem that ever one says compaq's and dell's have is they are hard to upgrade and repair. more upgrade than repair. Whats your guys take?

I think it depends on what machine you buy that determins how hard it is to upgrade and or repair I manage about 400 Dells and the corp in their wisdom purchased Optiplex GX 270 small form factor machines. these things are a joke the CD drives are from a laptop and there is no possible way to upgrade anything and the cases are so cramped that if you dont have the wiring in the exact location and the ribbon cables folded like it was from the factory you cannot close the case. but the flip side is I got to chose my machine and have a GX270 mini tower tons of room to work and upgrade in this case ...so the bottom line is you get what you pay for in any brand or product just do your homework

So Bob......what would you recommend in the Dell line for a home computer user like me? I don't do gaming or anything terribly complex.....just something simple but still with enough room in the case to add a second hard drive or other components later.

I would think something like this would work fine DELL I would upgrade the operating system to XP pro (i hate the home version) also upgrade the video card to a min of 128mb and the ram to a min of one gb
