  • Shorties vs. LTs

Started looking for headers to complement my mild cam going into the TA. I have always been an adamant supporter of long tubes for the real power gains, sound and just beastliness, but i would also like something i can put on fairly easily as i dont exactly love pulling motors.
I am thinking shorties might be as good for me since i am not planning on any other mods besides intake and tuning the pcm for it all, and i'm thinking it would be an easier install.
Also i was looking on SLP's website and they listed same hp increases for shorties vs long tubes ("up to ~35hp" i think it was). I know the gains are at different rpms, but its a torquey cam and low end is good, so another + for shorties.
If anyone has some insight as to ease of install or performance it would be much appreciated

SLP shorties are fairly easy to install. No jacking up of the motor, good fit and finish. When combined with a high flow Y pipe, the combo is fantastic. An added benefit is 50 state smog legal. It might not make a difference to you if there are no emissions inspections, but it often helps in the sale of the car at a later date. I have them on mine combined with a randon tech high flow dual cat Y pipe and I wouldn't trade that combo for long tubes unless I was going with a serious power adder.

Agree with Joe. My car has installed that combo: SLP shorties (coated) and Random Tech high flow dual cat Y pipe + SLP "2ontha left" cat back = no install problems, good clearance to ground, pretty good exhaust sound and some ponnies gained too.

I haven't had a chance to do the dyno of after the headers, but impressive gains to say the least. SLP Coated Shorty's & Catco Cat. Track showed 3+mph, and 3 tenths with more in it (pulled almost 7 degrees timing @93mph). Some false knock I gotta figure out, but I am more than satisfied with my decision to go with the shortys. Plug access is sooo much better, half the time.

Thanks a lot, guys. Thats what i figured.
So you think i can squeeze them in without moving a ton of stuff, eh? Still pricey though, $200 more than full length for my big block. I think that will be the end of my mods. Hopefully put on by summertime.
And yes, emissions are not cool but i have to slide by as Anchorage is the only part of AK required to pass I/M testing . Hopefully the cam will not be too detrimental to those efforts
