  • Blowing Courtesy 15AMP Fuse

Anybody... I have a 94Z that keeps blowing the courtesy fuse 15amp. Sometimes it take up to 30min and sometimes right away. I have removed just about all the interior lights and even removed the radio. Any suggestions? Thanks...

Would have to go and check, but isn't the courtesy light fuse a 20A fuse?

What gets my attention is that sometimes it takes a while for the fuse to blow. If you had a direct short, it would pop the fuse immediatly. That leads me to believe that there is an intermittant short somewhere. I would advise getting a shop manual. It will have wiring diagrams that you can check every wire with a digital volt meter. When I get home from the office, I'll look up the diagrams I have and tell you all what exactly is in that circuit. At least you'll have a starting point. This is, unless Fred comes to the rescue and chimes in.....

I had a similar problem with my '95 Z28. I had a wire in the console for the courtsey light pinched. Depending on how the console was jarred it would blow the fuse. It had me buffaloed for the longest time. This might not be your problem. Hopefully gives your an idea of what to look for.

My schematic is incomplete, but I went to the car and checked...... fuse 8 for the courtesy circuit is a 20 amp. Try that, it is within the tolerance and should be OK. Don't go over the 20 amp and see what happens. If it still blows, you're going to have to start tracing each wire.

I will try a 20amp fuse. If that does not fix the problem I will go and get a chiltons manual. Let me know if you have any other ideas. Thanks for your help. The weird thing is that I just started one day. I really never drive that car its a 94 with 49000 miles on it. Its never seen rain or snow. I have 10,000 miles with the blower on it. It runs real strong... Thanks

Don't think it runs anything else than the courtesy lights - I have some tropuble on my 98 with the light not turning off (probably the car alarm, as the door switches seem fine), so I removed the fuse - AFAIK only the lights are off now ...

This happened to me once when I owned my 88 Formula 350. I don't know if it is the same circuit on your car, but I figure I'd throw this out.

Check the cigarette lighter. Sounds dumb but, my formula had a freakin' penny stuck down in the bottom of it. Everytime you hit a bump or sometimes immediately it would short the lighter and blow the fuse. I overlooked this for a long time before I realized. If this isn't it, you will probably have to start probing wires.

Hm ... as I'm still running my GPS and cooler off the two power outlets, I don't think it's the same circuit on 4th gens anymore ...
