  • rear axle noises

Hello everyone, I hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year.
My car seems to be making a rythmic knocking noise and a metallic rubbing/grinding noise when the brakes are applied and at low speeds, the noise doesn't manifest at normal driving speeds.
I have changed the rear brake pads and the car had an MOT(government safety check)not long ago so I doubt it's the bearings.
It did happen a while ago and dissapeared when I changed the pads, but it has since returned.
The car has only covered 49,000 miles although was run in the Gumball3000.
I appreciate it's impossible to diagnose without hearing it for yourself, but any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thank you

Hiya, hope you had a good seasonal holiday.
I put copper grease on them when I fitted them as the anti-squeel shims had long since departed. It's not just the clonking/knocking but the rubbing noise as well.
Could there be an issue with the disc as they look a little thin?
Also now there is a squek coming from the front but since I haven't changed the pads yet I'll see what happens after they're done.
I look forward to the show season, hopefully the first one is in Aldershot which was excellent last year with everyone doing burnouts on the exit road with a huge crowd lined up watching!
Hope to see you at many shows, take care see you later

when the factory rear diff's in these cars wear out, the cones in them wear also. this allows the "c clip" axles to walk in and out. when they do this they sometimes can rub on the caliper mounting brackets. to test this, jack up the car, and grab one of the rear wheels. then push it in towards the center of the car and try pulling it out. keep in mind that there should be a little, and im talking no more than 1/16th of an inch movement there. if you grab one side or both in some cases, and it moves back and forth then it is probably worn out. you may also be fighting against a caliper while trying to do this. so you can get a better idea of the movement by taking of the wheel and the caliper and then try sliding the axle in and out. also, does your car do a one tire fire when you turn one way but not the other? this is also a sign of a worn diff. good luck and let us know whats up.

Thank you for the replies, I will check that I have enogh copper grease on the pads and will check the axle driveshafts for play, and I will advise the result.

in theory no they cannot fall out of the diff. the side of the cones that the c clips are in dont wear, just the part that contacts the outter part of the carrier wears. strange things do happen to worn out diffs though

I have a very similar problem i have a one tire fire and also my brakes have a lovely squeal too. i decided to live with the problem after bying new caliper brackets shims and guide pins i had no idea the c clips could wear out i need to change the diff fluid could i see what your saying if i pull the pumpkin cover off?

i knew i couldn't do the gears myself so i am not educated in the differential.

your C clips arent the problem, whats worn is the side gear wich is also cone shaped on one end. the cone is "forced" into the carrier by the springs between the left and right side gears. when one of thses cones wears out, it stops holding and starts slipping thus resulting in a one tire fire, and allowing side to side motion of your axles. problem is that you cant change just the side gears because it also wears the carrier out too, so the entire rear diff needs to be changed. this isnt the easiest job to do for a do it yourselfer, but with the correct tools, good instructions, alot of patience, and some one to help you out and guide you through it, it will be a cake walk the second time. so since the rear diff needs to be changed and the ring gear is bolted to it, its only a about 30 more mins of time to change the gears to a ratio of your choice. make sure you get a decent set of gears, a decent diff, and a master install kit, along with outter axle bearings and seals. might as well do the whole thing and only have it apart once.
