RK Sport sells a "clone" of the AS&M's for less $$$
Fred, neither the AS&M's or the RK Sport have emissions hook ups for the 96+F-body. Would it be easier to modify the headers to work with the AIR system, or would it be easier and more beneficial to just do an AIR delete?

AS&M only makes a "single cat" header set, for the 93-95 models. But it has the pre-cat O2 sensor, AIR and EGR connections on it. So, it would work on your car, and you could hook up the EGR (no difference), the pre-cat O2 sensors (no difference in the sensor, possible a harness extension) and the AIR (need bushings to convert your 5/8" AIR fittings to the earlier 7/8" AIR fittings.) This is going to be true of virtually any shorty or mid-length header you find, that is not designed for the 96/97 dual-cat cars. Generally, its the "long tube" design headers that do not have any emissions connections at all.

The problem with getting the correct dual-cat headers for a 96/97 is 1) limited selection (SLP, JBA, maybe 1 or 2 others), and 2) the poor layout required to fit the stock passenger side convertor in its STOCK location. To get CARB-EO emissions certification, the headers can not change the number of cats, or move them from their stock location. Hence, the drivers side primary tubes point up, and snake up over the drivers side valve cover, before making a u-bend and heading back toward the bottom. This arrangement does not maximize power gains, and causes a lot of stuff to melt under the hood. AS&M used to make a 96/97 dual-cat header, but they had som many problems with melting things under the hood, they stopped making them. A buddy of mine bought them and installed them on his 97 Z28, and had a huge number of problems, eventually pulling them off and swapping in SLP extrude honed stock manifolds.

So.... for your 96 you either have to decide to stay fully (visual and tailpipe) emissions legal, and buy one of the few CARB-EO dual-cat headers. OR you have to switch to the 94/95 design, and go to a single cat. This requires a new cat and an additional piece called an "S-pipe" to match the 94/95 headers/Y-pipe to the 96/97 rear exhaust system. Then you would have to either 1) add two after-cat O2 sensors after the single cat, 2) use O2 "simulators" to fool the PCM into thinking the after-cat sensors are still there, or 3) have the after-cat sensors "programmed out" of your PCM. And, while this setup should easilly pass tailpipe emissions, it won't pass a visual check.

Confusing.... but that's the way it is.

Thanks Fred! You never seize to amaze me with the kind of knowledge you have to offer ! Furthermore, do you know where I can get the fittings to hook up the AS&M's to the 96-97 AIR. Also, I was looking at the RK Sport headers, and it appears that the collector diameter is 2". Are the AS&M's the same? I think I remember reading somewhere that the AS&M's have a collector diameter of 2.25". Did you ever measure yours? Finally, does that single tube part of the header have to be welded onto the collector after installation or can it be welded prior to installation?

The AS&M's are at least 2.5" collectors. Mine were already modified when I got them, to run straight back for duals, and use 3" pipes.

The single tube is strictly a "friction" fit, no welding required. You don't want to do any welding on them if they are already "coated". I don't think I have heard of anyone having a leak on that tube.

            OK guys...

Thanks to the advice of all here is what I have decided to do. I am going to get the RK sport ceramic coated headers with the y-pipe. A little later, around summertime, I am going to have the stock heads ported and put in a cam. These items will be going on during the first week of Feb.

            1. Headers and y-pipe

            2. ZR1 Black replica wheels ( I decided to go with the 9.5 rears in case I want to lower the car later)

            3. CAI (still deciding which one)

As far as the CAI goes, I am having a lot of trouble. I am no expert by any means, but all of the ones I have seen from Moroso, K&N etc. look like they are terribly crimped. Don't we want that air flowing in as smooth as possible? This is becoming a tough decision. Help me out.

Also, what brand of header gaskets should I get and where can I buy them?

Sorry guys, just two more questions.....what are my chances of burning my plug wires with the headers?.....

AND.....what we all want to know......how much will the tires and these mods help me at the track!?......please answer.

            Thanks as always!

The design problem is you have to squeeze between the ABS pump and the radiator. There's only so many ways to skin the cat here.

I have the Moroso CAI and it works great. Look inside the stock one and you'll see the problem. I had to cut a little off the Moroso one to get it to fit. If I had it to do over again I would get the SLP.

BTW if you can't get the air into the engine, it isn't going to do any good improving the ability to get the air out of the engine. I'd move the CAI up your list.

                Thanks Jeff!

just looked at the SLP kit on their website. It looks a lot smoother than the others. That is the one I am going to get. Thanks for the heads up!

How do you thing these mods will help me at the track?

I'm not qualified to answer that question. ~30hp?

Do you have the performance rear end gear option? 3.23 gears instead of 2.73s. If you have 1st gear labeled on your shifter you have the performance gear option.

It's funny that you mention that....

The car is getting gears as we speak. I had 2.73's and am switching them to 3.73's.

I had been running 14.30 on the 16x8 wheels....so I'm hoping all of these mods makes a drastic improvement. Eventually I want to be in the 12's.

                    Thanks

I've got the gears and SLP CAI in the car now. The CPU is being reflashed as we speak. My question is what should I do next?

                      1. Headers?
                      2. Port stock heads
                      3. CAM
                      4.Torque converter
                      5.Something I did not mention?

                      Thanks guys!

I'm pretty convinced that I'm going to get the headers done. My question is is there some kind of wrap available to protect the plug wires?
