Currently running Random Tech Cats Part # 943003 and JBA Headers Part # 1804-1JS because that entire set-up is Smog Legal but the downside is that they are 1 5/8" shorties.
The AS&M package is every bit as legal as the Random Tech Y-pipe you have on your car The Random Tech Y-pipe moved the drivers cat down by the passenger side, there for technically illegal. The AS&M Package uses AS&M headers and a similiar Random Tech Y-pipe (just different flanges to mount to the header). You are get the better headers (94-95 Style Mid length) but a higher flowing Dual Cat-Y-pipe to boot.

You have a very good setup so I wouldn't worry about that. But unless JBA changed the Drivers side shorty header its the same Dual Cat Header thats on their website that connects to that triangular flange where the Cat used to mount to (but is now just the flange hooked to a pipe going down to the cat) Its not as long of a header but still good for the application.

Eric your y-pipe probably looks like this one.

    http://www.tbyrnemotorsports.com/lt1catalog.html

This 2 1/2" pipe is a direct replacement for the factory Y-pipe and comes with 2 highflow converter. This unit will bolt up to the factory manifolds and may require some modification to mate up to aftermarket headers. Horsepower gains will be in the 10hp range on a stock car and higher on a modified car.

We also have an offroad version without cats available. 02 simms will be needed to keep your computer happy.

Anyway........I still think its a nice combo you have. Cause like I said I was going to go with something similiar.

Yep, that's what I've got. If I remember correctly getting the triangular flange from Header to Y-Pipe was difficult to say the least. Had to break-out the torch and twist the Y-pipe so it would line up with the Header flange. So, the Random Tech Cats I purchased were the Universal pieces, where as the AS&M Headers bolt directly to their respective Random Tech converters.

Actually I am still running the original O2 sensors with a HOT cam and no problems, except for the bonehead move of not getting the specific relocation wiring required but instead simply splicing some wires together and then watching them fuse to one another under the heat or load. Fred knows all about it, he kept me sane for the better part of two months while I tried to find out why I was popping fuses before I tracked the problem down.

I will admit that the entire exhaust is still pretty quite even after the mods. Maybe the original SLP Cat-back with resonators is the culprit. Take care

Made up my mind. MAC midlength w/off road Y package. Little under $500. That's cool cause I get the Y pipe too. I would be willing to spend 500 on headers, and more for the Y. I will see if they offer the headers coated.

I want those long tubes, but I don't think it'd blow over too well when the car is dropped 2".

Don't forget all the odds and ends as well. Decent cat will run $100-$200 or a piece of pipe from a shop for about $20 installed, new gaskets, new bolts (you'd be stupid to use the old ones), possibly new plug wire(s), heat shields, O2 sensors to replace the front 2 and either simulators or a reprogramming for the rear 2.

Headers come with all gaskets, and bolts. I don't even think I'd be able to get the old bolts off in one piece even if I wanted to reuse them. You ever done those? The heads usually break (just my experiences). I'm going to use a piece of pipe, no cat. I already have new plugs and wires. I have just about everything I need.

Doug, thanks for pointing that out. I hate the 96-97 design.

Is there any reason you're going with 1.625" primaries instead of 1.75" primaries? If you're gonna go that far, might as well open up the primaries as much as possible while you're at it.

Fred had told me before about a great solution to the drop the car/longtube problem, and that was the AS&M mid lengths. However they were too rich for my blood so then Fred pointed out the fact that I can get a clone of them from rksport.com for 450.00 with the y-pipe and ceramic coating!

Thing is, I really wanted the 1 3/4 primaries because I have plans to do more down the road and what is the use of buying headers if you have to replace them later because they don't flow well enough?

Stick to your original plans and whenever you do one mod it seems you have to keep in mind the next three mods that are related. For instance, do you want to do cam/heads or anything like that? These guys will tell you those headers are going to hurt your numbers at that point. I'm no expert but I'm sure guys on the board have fought with that same situation. Stay patient until you find what you want.

You have to love this board for helping you find stuff you never would have alone.
