  • Anyone Else Have A Problem Neighbor?

Joe's post about his neighbors in another thread prompted me to create this one. Why do neighbors have to be like this?

I live at the end of a small cul-de-sac. There are only three houses on the entire road. Our mailboxes are at the end of the road, so I only check it once or twice a day when I'm leaving. I have this one neighbor who never got along with anyone in the neighborhood except the person who used to live in my house.

Anyway - We get those stupid Bonus Dollar papers all the time. Twice a week at least. Well, he doesn't like them, so he hangs his on my mailbox everytime he gets one, even though I already grabbed mine. I used to just throw it out in my recycle bin, but it's become principle to me now. I just throw it on his mailbox and the cycle continues. Last week, he put it INSIDE my mailbox. I left a note taped to his stating he is breaking the law by opening someone elses mailbox. He responded by letting his spoiled brat 14 year old ride his quad on my lawn while I was at work.

BTW - That quad has become a point of contention with myself and the other house on the street. This kid has a custom pipe on it, and rides it up and down our road at all hours. The other neighbor called the police to see if it was illegal, but the town considers our road private, thus, it's out of their hands.

Any suggestions on what we can do? I should point out, the kid and his obnoxious Father are not at all mechanically inclined. They leave the quad under their deck. My buddy said I should go over there at night and knock the top half of the spark plug off with a hammer. I can't see myself doing that, although they are testing that theory every time I find tire marks on my lawn.

A lawsuit is the only suggestion I can offer. Usually thse kinds of people never come around though no matter what you do. I have had several neighbors like that in the past and it's just plain aggravating.

Believe me, Jay. I'm not a destructive person, but they are pushing me. There is a laundry list of things they do as well that I could name.

Dave, I thought long and hard about a lawsuit, but I don't have any solid proof, or the funds to drag something like that out. I know I could easily get proof (mini-camera, etc), but all I'm looking to do is knock his quad out of commission for a couple weeks. Oh, man... I guess I already sold myself on that prospect.

No Trespassing signs and a box of nails or for easier clean up, use a 2x4 and put the nails into that and bury that under ground. Then all you have to do is remove the 2x4 to get rid of the nails and you won't have to worry about missing one when you go to pick them up. Not that I've done it or anything.

Have you tried just going over and talking to him?

The worse neighbor I have is a druggy. His kids are always running around half-fully naked, garbage all over their yard which, of course, ends up in mine, people stopping over constantly, just to name a few things... Its terrible. I only hope that they will move before I do. As for your situation, I agree with Ranger Bob, talk to him and explain what is goin on. Anything else would be Illegal and not worth getting caught and sued. Hopefully it will go well and not get worse. Although soothing, the whole nail in a 2x4 would be nothing but a liability and a reason for them to sue ya. Good luck...

Sorry, Bob. I should have mentioned this previously. You are absolutely right. Communication is first priority. Unfortunately, he believes his son can do no wrong, and told me to "Get the F--- out of my yard" when I went over to speak to him about this a few weeks ago.

I should also mention it wasn't always this way. When I first moved here in '99, he was a fairly nice guy. I even helped him do several things around his yard because his son was still too young at the time to help him (digging up large rocks, trimming trees, spreading top soil, etc). I am also the only one who owns a snowblower big enough to clear the entire road (it's really more of a long, shared driveway). I always do the snow removal during and after storms, no complaint. The most he ever did was tell me how I should be doing it differently.

He was feuding with the previous owners of the third house on the street before they moved last year. He found out I was friendly with them, and stopped talking to me all together. Trust me, I'm fine with that. It's all the little things he's begun doing over the last year or so that tick me off. -Sigh- I guess some people are happiest making other people mad.

                      On the issue of mail:

Contact the postal inspector. That is his jurisdiction, messing with the mail is a federal offence.

On the ATV: As long as you have proof of destruction, take it to court. Of course you could always rent a rather large 4x4 and do a few doughnuts next to his front porch since they seem to like 4 wheeling.

If you really want to put the ATV out of service, a can of furniture varnish in the fuel tank will wreak havoc.

Wow, Joe... Sounds like you've thought of these things in the past.

He only opened my mailbox the one time, and I think the note scared him off that habit. I will keep an eye on it, however. As far as the ATV, I've been gathering ideas in case it continues. The great part about them being mechanically deficiant is, they wouldn't know where to look for the possible problem. He's one of these guys that believes he could fix it though.

He doesn't even change the oil on his cars or tractor! I should probably just wait out the inevitable engine seize that will occur to the quad.

Occationally I've had to deal with neighbors that were jerks. In most every case there is a way to make the laws work for you. In the rare instance that it doesn't, I subscribe to one-upping them to the point of their total embarassment. As an example, years ago I had a butthead neighbor that was harassing me for having several large Rottweilers. At that time there was nothing I could do about, he was just being a complete jerk and kept the harassment going. He evidently thought that over time I would give in. So I just thought about it for a week or two. My solution was simple. Since he just put in a pool, the local laws state that the owner must put up a fence to prevent children, etc. from getting into the pool. Now this guy had a fence where the sides hooked up to my fence along the back. My solution was to take down my fence, section by section and store it over behind my shed. According to zoning I wasn't required to have a fence and was within my right to take it down. Needless to say my neighbor was pissed when code enforcement showed up and told him that he had to put up a new fence or be fined X dollars daily. As soon as code enforcement left, I went out into the back yard where he started fuming...... That's when I struck a deal. The deal was if he shut his mouth and quit harassing me, I would put the fence back up and he wouldn't have to pay for a new one.

You see, there is usually an unconventional way to solve a conventional problem. It's unfortunate that you have to resort to crap like this because people have little respect for others, but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
