  • The New Pontiac G8!

It's looking really good so far.

Pontiac isn't letting its Australian connection go that easy with the demise of the GTO. Instead, it's bringing back a 4-door relative based on the Holden Commodore SS, but rather than use the GTO badge, it calls this sedan the G8. The base model is equipped with a 261-bhp 3.6-liter V-6, which also boasts 250 lb ft of torque, which it delivers to the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic with sequential shift mode. The big dog G8 GT is powered by a 362 bhp 6.0-liter V-8, which produces 391 lb ft of torque. GT buyers will be able to select from either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, although the manual option will be added after the car is launched.

Any idea what the price will be? If I can get a V6 version with a decent amount of goodies for 25ish... It might be my next daily driver.

I don't think it would be unreasonable to expect a base price of a little less than $25k. MSRP of course.

I'd love to get a GT version, but with a V6 like that, I could put up with the base model. I love the fact that there's a 6-speed manual tranny on the GT. A few years back nobody would have expected that in a sedan. This is a step in the right direction for Pontiac!

The V8 would be nice, but if it's 4500 lbs the excitement will be turned down a notch or two. I hope they can keep it no fatter than 3800 lbs, then the HP will mean something rather than just hauling dead weight.

That thing is actually looking pretty nice and putting up some solid numbers. But I really wish they would find a way to make it not look like the vibe's front.

Agree, that front end needs styling work vs look-like-it-has-been-slopped-together styling. Too many unrefined angles. Other than that, not bad for a pontiac

Boy, if they can build enough of these, and sell them inexpensively enough to move several thousand, I can see the beginning of of a new cult car- I belong to a couple 9C1 (Police Car) and Impala SS clubs, and those guys have been feeling abandoned by GM since the demise of the B-body in '96. Sort of like what GM did to the F-body in '02- they perfected the car, then killed it off-

These guys, and, probably me, too, have been complaining to GM for years that there was no V-8 powered, RWD sedan for the enthisiast's market, if said enthusiast had a family- Can hardly call a FWD minivan a sporty ride, and not everybody wants a 10 MPG truck-

If this thing takes off, like I think it will, (and that is probably cost-dependant) we will soon see new car lists and clubs, telling how to tune these puppies- Does this mean that GM is slowly pulling it's corporate head out of it's butt?

I heard mention of 30-50,000 cars per year on sale early next year.

Some news about pricing from Autoweek:
GM has not set pricing for the G8 yet, but sources say it probably will be priced just above the Grand Prix's starting price. The Grand Prix starts at $22,315, including shipping.

                      Independent rear suspension
Standard Antilock Brakes with Traction Control and Stability Control

That interior/dashboard looks an awful lot like the one I have in my TL. That's not a bad thing. Just reminds me of it quite a bit.
