Like Al 96 said though, if you're cheating, you're missing the whole point. Just because other people do it doesn't make it right. Anyway, how on Earth does breaking 30 pieces of wood prove anything? Wood doesn't hit back, plus it's just wasteful. I could understand sparring and maybe forms (katas), hitting pads or a bag or something like that. To me, this would be like getting a black belt for shadow boxing.

You know where you stand without an additional stripe on your belt, right? Why risk injuring yourself? I think it's things like this which cause people to hate Jigoro Kano for inventing the belt system in the first place. People lose sight of the art and the point of the art itself and become obsessed with belts. Don't risk injuring yourself because you need a second stripe on your belt. That's my take on it anyhow. If you're that into it, ask someone else who's found a way to make the wood break more easily.

This reminds me of a comic I saw a while back-

Red 95 Trans Am: M6, Moroso CAI, Magnaflow, Spohn sway bars, back to life as of 2/15/10!!!
          SOLD- Kinda miss it
94 Del Sol VTEC: 27 city/ 33 highway, knee deep in slowness
          SOLD- Good riddance!
2006 Ford Fusion: 2.3, 5 speed, could run 15lbs of boost with a 150 shot and it'd still be slow

It's a 4 hour test ,1 hour sparring ,1 hour doing forms,1 hour doing kicks and stances and 1 hour breaking wood

Way to go! I think you've made the right decision. The whole point of the test is proving you can endure the physical and mental challenge, regardless of what they might be. Breaking 30 pieces of wood is simply a challenge which requires both mental and physical stamina. Obtaining the goal reinforces the center of your strength...and proves you've got what it takes to overcome.

Outstanding! I'm really happy for you. You made the correct choice. You'll look back on this 30 years from now and remember how good it felt to succeed without cheating.

Ok I've been following this thread and there's one thing I don't understand. Based on what you're saying, you can or have to bring your own wood to the test?

Wouldn't you think to make it fair for everybody, they supply the same wood for everybody that attempts the test?

                                Or am I missing something?
