( I thought this was a discussion about our political choices, but am willing to go down a tangent) I have no problem with whatever consenting adults do in private. I object when they want to parade and flaunt their proclivities for all to see. Smacks a little too much too me, at least, of advertising. One thing I particularly abhor is when people of this persuassion try to seduce or recruit those who may be vulnerable. And, despite 'their' denials, it does occur. I am speaking from experience, not from any movies or scientific studies. I personally have been harassed and hounded despite my vigorous objections. Another thing I object to is the changing of accepted meanings of words- for example, 'gay' - remember when it used to mean care-free and happy? Now it has become laden with sexual innuendo- why call a civil contract between like-sex people a marriage? That word already has a defined meaning- If they want to have a contract,' 'til death do them part' fine, but don't rewrite the english langauge, please.

In either case, I don't think the government belongs in people's bedrooms, as long as no people are being harmed. Like abortion, that should be a private decision, that shouldn't have a whole bunch of others involved in making such difficult decisions. As the republicans CLAIM, but seldom exhibit, I am all for smaller, less-intrusive government. Cheaper, too- Unfortunately, I don't see that option in either candidate on the ballot this year-

Change can be worse too, you know. People who voted for Nobama just so their side wins or because they just want a change, are of the same ilk that voted for Clinton in his second term even though he was obviously despicable.

I'm going to add that McCain isnt much of a choice, either - too bad the Republicans don't know how to run a campaign.

The change I would like to see is either a write-in campaign for president that stood a ghost of a chance, or a ballot slot that specified, "None of the above" and would force a new run-off if both candidates were not able to get enough votes-

Voting for either party these days is like either side of the same coin- and the coin itself is corrupt, and not responsive to will of the voters. Some representative government, indeed. I haven't seen an idealistic candidate in decades, men with ideas and values that extended beyond their own personal ambitions for wealth and power, or to advance their party at expense to this great nation. These days it really feels like the 'inmates are running the asylum' as the saying goes.

Sorry to go on such a rant, and I am grateful for the leeway provided by the mods. This particular forum is composed of mature people who refrain from the childish name-calling and insults. Nice to be able to air concerns and discuss ideals that are truly important about the direction our country is going- even in a car-forum. I have noticed many lists I subscribe to are going political over the last couple weeks, another indicator of how many people are unhappy with how this election has been progressing. Not that anybody running the country seems to care- At this point, I am no longer even sure about who is running the show- the politicians? They seem to be mere greedy puppets? The political parties? They get to choose their front people and reward favors, but seem to be slaves to special interest with deep pockets- The huge multi-national companies? They seem to be able to buy politicians, judges, and elections to advance their goals of snapping up competition and maximizing how many dollars they are able to suck from the citizens- Back in Dwight Eisenhower's day, as he left office, he warned Americans about the "Military-Industrial Complex", I think he is credited with coining that term-

How on earth are we even considering having our ports protected by a security company from Dubai, or buying computer components for our cruise missiles from China? What about home-brewed manufacturing jobs, to say nothing about national security? Seems like everybody has gone nuts trying to maximize profits and line their own pockets-

My solution to this is a bit different. The conservatives take issue with gay marriages because of the connotations with their religious beliefs. Today the gay rights activists are trying to make the conservatives give up their religious beliefs concerning the word marriage.

Can you tell I'm an engineer. I find solutions to fix problems. Maybe we need an engineer to be president. How about an injuneer.
I agree with ya there. I think what myself (conservative) and many others find offensive is how gay rights activists tend to want us to abandon our principles and accept theirs, as if we totally can't agree, which is sometimes true. Marriage has always had religious connotations, union is an appropriate term for any "legal joining" of any two people.

What we really need is a huge change in the government. I am an avid reader of Tom Clancy books, and one of his books made me wish alot of it were fact rather than fiction. The name of the book was "Debt of Honor." And in it his popular character, Jack Ryan, becomes president through an unfortunate series of events including (ironically enough this book came out before 9/11) a Japanese airline pilot whose brother was killed iby U.S. forces in a previous book, in an act of vengence flies his jumbo jet into the House during the President's State of the Union speech, killing basically the bulk of the U.S. government. Ryan, having reluctantly accepted the job of VP on a temporary basis becomes president and is faced with the task of rebuilding the government. Being a historian and an intelligence guy for the CIA, he is far from a politician and builds the government as only a non-politician would: putting people in power who he sees as uncorruptible and who have relevant experience for the job. For example, he puts a self made millionaire (non-politician) in charge of the treasury, and has him re-write the tax code to bring it down from a 100lb volume to something that a normal person can understand. He refuses to listen to special interests and won't take a cent from lobbyists.
Reading the book, I was thinking if only that could happen in real life, only without the obvious tragedy. Theoretically "we the people" have the right to throw out our current government representatives and start from scratch if we deem it necessary. Of course, that will never happen. But, wouldn't it be nice? Imagine...a government that is actually run with the best interests of the poeple and the country as a whole, not just those who can pony up to the table with the most money. If Jack Ryan were real and was running, I would vote for him. As for the crap we have to choose from this time...well....as I stated early on in this thread: It's just a matter of picking the lesser of two evils. I am basically disgusted at what our government has become. We have gotten so far away from what our founding fathers had in mind for our nation that I truly fear for our future. Political correctness, lack of morality, Godlessness, throwing out English as our official language and giving other cultures more importance than our own, etc etc etc, are destroying the foundation that the country was built on. I can see us going to way of Rome if things don't change. I just hope that I, nor my kids or grandkids don't have to see it happen.

How? Because our current environmental policies and tax system forces companies to look elsewhere to do business. When was the last time you heard of anyone producing steel in this country? Why has that happened? Environmental policy has made it too expensive to produce here. Why are jobs being shipped overseas? Because it is cheaper to employee someone in a country where your company isn't forced to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in benefits to its employees. Thanks to our tax system, labor is just plain cheaper elsewhere.

Yea I know it's right wing bla bla bla.
Over 120,000 people are employed in the coal industry.
49% of energy in this country is currently generated by coal.
He says, "If someone wants to build a coal power plant they can, but it will bankrupt them because they are going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being admitted."
Take away coal and it will be a LOT harder to achieve energy independence.

Do you think the gay comunity would settle for anything less than the word "Marriage?" I have a feeling they wouldn't. They wouldn't even settle for the same rights under a "Civil Union." I agree that what they do behind closed doors is nobodys business but their own, but what do you make of G.L.A.D. seizing every opportunity they get to force us to watch the kinds of things that go on behind those doors? MTV is a great example of this. I use to enjoy some of their reality shows from time to time, but now every one of their series has some gay or lesbian character or some gay and lesbian theme. What's really dispicable is how they've been comparing this issue to the social injustices of the 50s and 60s. Special rights for special intrests group .

Wouldn't it be terrifying if President Obama was repeatedly told about imminent threats against the nation, and he simply dismissed them out-of-hand? And what if the US was attacked, and he just sat in a classroom, reading a kids' book, because he didn't know what to do?
Wouldn't it be just awful if President Obama started ignoring the Constitution, and declared himself unaccountable to anyone? And what if he started cranking out "signing statements", began pardoning people who were instrumental in outing a covert CIA agent, or allowed White House emails to be deleted in complete defiance of the law? Worse yet, what if he started wiretapping American citizens' phone calls, and started snooping into their internet activities?

Wouldn't it be truly dreadful if President Obama lied our country into war, and then started handing out no-bid contracts to war-profiteers who didn't give a flying fark about the safety of our troops if it cut into their obscene profits?

Wouldn't it be downright disillusioning if President Obama poured billions into an unwinnable war while our infrastructure, our schools, our hospitals and our entire economy were left in complete ruin?

Wouldn't it be devastating if President Obama encouraged the deregulation of everything from banking practices to the inspection of food coming into the country?

Wouldn't it be profoundly disturbing if President Obama continued on one of his many vacations while a major US city was wiped-out by a natural disaster? And what if he completely ignored the victims of said disaster in the aftermath, and just allowed them to die?

Wouldn't it be absolutely disastrous if President Obama appointed incompetent cronies to important positions, like Attorney General? And what if his appointee started purging the department of experienced, competent people based solely on their political affiliation?

Wouldn't it be morally reprehensible if President Obama condoned the use of torture, or the unlimited detention of people without charge or trial?

Wouldn't it be an incredible outrage if President Obama insisted on tax subsidies for corporations making record profits, or tax incentives for companies that outsourced American jobs?

Wouldn't it be unbelievably humiliating if President Obama consistently made a fool of himself in public settings, and became the punchline of every late-night monologue due to his ignorance, his inability to speak coherently, and his drunken displays at international meetings of import?

Wouldn't it be overwhelmingly embarrassing if the stature of the United States was irreparably harmed every time President Obama opened his mouth and proved how God damned stupid he was in front of the entire world?

Wouldn't it be fantastically detrimental if President Obama was deliberately divisive at a time when the country most needed to come together? And what if he started saying things like "You're either with us or against us" and you knew he meant YOU were against your own country if you didn't just toe-the-line and accept his way of thinking?

Wouldn't YOU find it totally unacceptable if President Obama did any of the above?

Well, I'm sure YOU would - and I have no doubt that if President Obama even thinks about doing any of the aforementioned, we will be hearing from ALL OF YOU immediately.

That's because real Americans don't bow their heads and accept such behavior without speaking up, despite being called anti-American, terrorist-loving appeasers, non-patriots and socialist freaks.

Despite your abject silence over the last eight years, I am sure you will suddenly find your voices again, at-the-ready to de even a perceived affront to your rights, your freedoms, and your liberty as citizens.

What a pity it will be eight years too late.
