I helped my brother install coated pacesetters on his 99Z28. They are tricky but honestly not that bad. We had off the plugs coil packs and valve covers but that was also because he was doing a cam swap then as well. Be very careful when removing your old bolts from the heads that you don't break any off but being an 01 that shouldn't be such an issue. We did not need to remove the engine mounts on either side but you will need to have the car jacked up very high to be able to wiggle them in from underneath. I'd recommend setting aside a day you don't have any other plans and getting a friend to help. Also a case of beer and a box of bandaids doesn't hurt either . The gains are different from car to car but if you look at Jays numbers with just bolt ons that shows how much LS1's benefit from being able to breathe better.

Go with out the emissions stuff. Scrap the cats and go with O2 sims. My buddy did that to his 01Z. He went with the Hooker cat back also. Sounds awesome.

If you live in Cali, I guess you have to go with all the emissions stuff. Don't know about the laws out there.

      Good luck.

The law everywhere in the US is it is illegal to remove the catalytic converters. There is really no gain in it and I wish people would quit advising people to remove them.

It is actually illegal to use LT's anywhere because even if you use cats you need to move them and that is illegal. In most places if you buy them with the emission hook ups and have cats you can get away with them. Also with having a 01 don't you have the LS6 intake and no EGR? If I'm right there then you'd only have an AIR pump hook up which isn't going to cost you hp and you can stay pretty much legal.

Jeff 95 Z28 I've also read people saying that removing cats doesn't give you much gain. Could you or someone else post some dyno results to back that up? I've seen inside stock cats and they look like they cause a decent amout of back pressure. I'm not trying to start an arguement here I'd just like to see some hard evidence prooving that because that would make a real good case not to make your car pollute more for no real gain.

Good reading...I'm searching but haven't found a dyno chart yet to see what the loss of having a stock cat is.

Did all 01 T/A's come with the LS6 intake or only some? Would that include FireHawks and Formulas too? Any Camaro's come with the LS6?

                  I think all 01 and 02 LS1's got the LS6 intake in f-bodies.

the only real benefit to removing the cat is that cats go bad, and when they do, they cost money to replace. They can hurt performance too when they start to go. That's why I eliminated mine. I considered a high flow cat to go behind my ORY, but it was cheaper to just put a straight pipe there. If emissions isn't a deal in your area, forget about it. Anyone who wants to argue that they should keep the cats, more power to ya. Don't hate on me for removing my cats.

                    Just my 5.7 cents.

Just don't drive in front of me because I don't want to smell it. I'm glad everyone doesn't remove their cats.

I wouldn't even think of attempting this project on your own unless you have access to a lift. You will need a full Saturday afternoon and at least 1 buddy to help.

I did them on my car and also helped my brother do his on his LS1 and we had no need for a lift. We had to jack the car up very high but I think it was easier with it on the ground cause one guy could get under the car and the other could stand on a stool and help guide them up from the top.

After using a lift, I would never want to try doing this without it...
