  • I may have a rare Formula, please help.

I am new to this message board; I may have a rare 95 Formula. I need some help in verifying this, so I figure… Why not post a message on the largest F-Body message board…?

I am going to try and make a long story, as short as possible.

I purchased a 95 Pontiac Formula about a year ago at a used car lot “I was searching for an LT-1 Formula that was black with T-Tops, and a T-56... with no luck;” I settled for an Artic White LT-1 bird, with T-Tops and a 6 speed; with plans of painting it black. The interior stood out the most… Torch Red leather. This is my 3rd Forth Gen. Formula I have owned; so I am very familiar with the cars.

I figured a pervious owner had the seats recovered…? No, turns out they are factory covered seats and door panel inserts. The option codes “in the glove box” show two interior codes; 70I “Interior Trim - Torch Red,” and 702 “Trim Combination Leather - Torch Red.” Now, to my knowledge, Torch Red interior was only offered in the Camaro’s and Corvettes, not the Pontiac F-Bodies?

I’ve worked at many GM dealerships in the past, and I have acquired a few GM Services Manuals “Dealership only manuals, not sold to the general public.” Anyway, I have both manuals for the 95 F-Bodies, so I decided to check, and identify all the option label codes I have. A few of my codes where NOT listed in the manual.

The codes that did not appear in manual are… MN6, VM3, and 1SZ, so I went to see a friend of mine at the parts department of a local GM dealership to check the codes… Here is what was stated on his computer screen.

MN6- Transmission, Manual, 6 Speed “Special”
    VM3- Vehicle Identification “Restricted”
    1SZ- Package Option “Restricted”

The “Restricted” codes are NOT invalid, the dealership is denied access to a complete description of the code… Why?

The MN6 code does explain why I had a hard time finding the rear tranny seal… I could not find the correct rear seal, so I had to match one up, turns out the LS-1 T-56’s used this seal. I figured a previous owner swapped out for the better tranny? I did notice a label on the transmission that stated “DO NOT SERVICE” and had a phone number to call. Unfortunately the label came off when I pressured washed the tranny. Still I figured nothing to losing the label, but then later I thought about it… If someone did swap to the LS1 T-56 “at the dealership” it would have the “DO NOT SERVICE” stated on it, but instead of a phone number, it should have said “EXCHANGE PROGRAM,” right?

Now the VM3 code, I have no idea what it is… But, the 1SZ strikes me as odd… The “1S” codes are Package Option codes, only 6 are available, the last letter of the code will vary from “A-F.” 1SA being Package Option 01, 1SB being Package Option 02, all the way to 1SF being Package Option 06, etc. So, what Package Option can 1S”Z” be?

Another code the car has “shown in the manual,” is JIF- Brake Provisions, Special to Suit Foreign Regulations. The brakes appear to be nothing out of the ordinary; the rotors appear to be your basic F-Bodies rotors, with the standard single piston calipers found on the LT-1 F-Bodies.

If anyone knows what these codes mean, or have these codes on their option label, please let me know. I will look further in to this and post what I find. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time, and I will frequent this site often.

MN6 is nothing special. My car has that code in the SPID label, and it has never had the tranny swapped. By the way, the SPID label cannot be changed, it is applied at the factory, and the VIN is "married" to those parts, so the code was not changed after it left the factory.

To answer your interior question will take a little help. There was a dealer that did the red interior, I believe they were in Florida, but it has been about a year since I've seen anybody mention it. However, it was not a factory option, it was dealer applied, so it doesn't make it any more rare in a factory-appointed way. I believe somebody else has posted on this board in the past with the red interior answers. Hopefully they will see this and respond.

I am in Florida "Tampa Bay area" so that may help expalin the interior, but...

I know the label is installed at the factory, the VIN is also on the label, along with the 70I, and 702 codes. If a dealership did do the interior, why are the "Torch Red" codes already on the label?

Thank you for the input on the MN6 code.

Too bad you don't have the original window sticker. That would tell quite a bit. Not about the options, but the source. The delivered dealer would be printed on the bottom unless this was a "brass hat" car that ended up going through the GM auction. Then it would clearly state "GM Auction" . There are many times that someone with pull would get a car run through the line with odd colors or options. These so called "brass hat" cars are a real find if that is what you have.

Can you take a Picture of the RPO sticker so that we may see all the codes.

Do these cars have a build sheet in them like other cars do? My 85 Mustang had one behind the right rear side panel. My 70 Dodge had one under the front seat between the springs and the foam.

Joe, thanks for the input... I may try and seach the origin of the car by doing VIN search...?

I can take a pic of the Option Label... I'll try and post it, but if I can't, I'll gladly e-mail the pic to anyone who askes.

Jeff, I don't think there is a "Build Sheet" for the GM F-Bodies, but if anyone knows, please let me know.

              Thanks again.

I searched the web on the 1SZ code; 1SZ: Discount option package... I also found out what the VM3 means; VM3: Bumpers standard impact 5 MPH front & rear... I geuss the car is not that rare "LOL..." Sorry to waste your time...

My car came with the 'Torch red' leather seats. Its pretty rare. I've seen a couple Firebirds with the red leather but thats it. I few with White leather but also rare. See the original factory interior as well as the original window sticker below.

The "Firebird Red Book" lists the "Bright Red", Code 70 leather (all models) and "Bright White" (convertibles only) Code 10 leather interiors as "new for 1995" factory options (ignoring the fact that the 94 25ths had white leather). I don't think I have seen many of them, but it is a documented factory option. Relatively rare.

MN6 is the code for all T56's from 1994 on up. Nothing special. My 94 has the code. Nothing rare there. Alll the early T56's had the "do not service label", although I never saw one with a phone number. The label was removed from the T56's in 1996 or 1997, when the dealer mechanics had been trained in its repair. I have a T56 out of a 1997 in my garage, and there is no label on it. I dont' think a T56 from an LS1 would even have a label on it.

You can't swap an LS1 T56 into an LT1. The input shaft for the LS1 T56 is longer, and the clutch actuation is a conventional "pusher" design, rather the the "pullback" design used with the LT1.

VM3 is "label information consumer, contains bumper impact standared". Nothing rare here.

1SZ is a "discount" option package, according to the online decoder sites. Doesn't sound too exotic.

This source seems to know more about the GM RPO codes than your "secret" GM manuals :

Hey after I bought My 95 TA a friend of mine bought one. His was a Red 1995 Trans Am with the Red Interior as well. We are in flordia also but I noticed that his Lt1's AIR tubes were different, his passanger one kind of curled back as were mine didnt, it went striaght into the rubber hose. there were also a couple of sensors on my vacum line that he didnt have, all of which I removed when I ditched the AIR pump in my motor rebuild as they were a part of the system. Why were our car different if they were the same year.

Correct me if i'm wrong Injuneer, but doesn't the actuator on an LT-1 push the clutch fork in?? And I also thought they only used the pull design on Corvettes and Vipers? Please school me on these T-56's if you could.
