  • What is "normal" oil pressure on the LS1?

What does the oil pressure run on an LS1 F-Body, at idle, and say 2,000rpm, fully warmed up. My Silverado with the iron block 4.8L is typically above 40psi at idle and slightly above 60psi at 2,000rpm (Mobil 1 10W-30, "standard" AC/Delco filter). Is this just something they do with the truck engines, or does the LS1 aluminum block 5.7L run at similar pressures?

    Just curious.

Sounds about par for most of the internally stock LS1's I have ridden in. I think the slightly higher and split pressures have a lot to do with pump being in the front and the filter being in the rear. I'm sure you already know this but, the pressures can also be funky on the LS1's due to the revised oil path of the main galley from the traditional small blocks. The main bearings and the camshaft and camshaft bearing are oiled simultaneously as opposed to the cam bearings first then the mains.

I also wish GM would have spent a little more time with the LS1 PCV setup also.

Thanks for the info. I never really looked at the LS1 oiling system.

Sort of confused on where to go with the Silverado. It is a daily driver now, and I'd like a bit more power than the 4.8L engine provides. Seems like a waste to add a nitrous kit or a screw-type blower to the small engine. I guess the best thing to do would be to look in a bone yard for a 6L/4L80E out of a 2500. There are some very attractive 400+ ci shortblocks available using the 6L iron blocks.

Fred, how much power you looking to make? Don't know if you've pondered the thought of doing heads and cam to your 4.8, but in the case you have, here is a very informative collection of camshaft info for your 4.8:

Thanks. Good page. The Chris Endres book on LS1/LS6 Performance has some good info on cams, head interchangeability, etc. Seem like you could do a decent job on the 4.8L, but then what if you just started with the 6L?

I need to find out what the truck weighs? I have the extended cab, so that adds weight, but its 2WD and I also have the plastic step-side body, to that should have saved a little.

I've seen some good magazine article of these trucks running 13's without a lot of work. Odd that GM can't do better than 15's with the Silverado SS. I couldn't believe how weak they ran last year when a couple of them showed up at the SLP Customer Appreciation Day. I guess when you start lugging 5,300# around, even 6L isn't going to bail you out.....
